Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec recently dished to The Hollywood Reporter about some of the narrative decisions that almost didn’t happen, including the beefing up of Tyler Lockwood’s (Michael Trevino) role. According to Julie, Tyler was nearly just a supporting character, but "we knew [he] was going to be really important… so we wanted to include him in the series regular group, even though we knew he probably wouldn't get to the real meat of the story until season two."

Basically, Tyler as the important TVD character we know him as today almost didn’t happen, which got us exploring the land of “what if?” What if Tyler never happened? We speculate below.

Would Matt and Caroline still be together?

Granted, Tyler wasn’t the only factor in Caroline and Matt’s breakup. That had more to do with Matt’s decision to distance himself from the supernatural than it did Caroline and Tyler’s burgeoning bond. But we can’t help but think these two might have gotten back together if not for the relationship between Caroline and Tyler.

Would Klaroline be together?

Again, we don’t think Tyler is the main reason Caroline hasn’t completely caved to her feelings for Klaus Caroline has issue with many of the bad things Klaus has done, irrespect of his actions against Tyler but the pain Klaus has caused Tyler has been the most tangible reminder of Klaus’s dark side and inability to empathize. Would Caroline and Klaus have gotten together already (for more than just a forest hookup) if not for Tyler’s prominent role in Caroline’s life.

Would Mrs. Lockwood still be alive?

Would Mrs. Lockwood even have been a character on TVD if not for Tyler’s prominence as a character in his own right? Probably not, but she’d probably still be alive off-screen. Or, she’d be helping Sheriff Forbes run the town on-screen. Klaus killed the Lockwood matriarch because of Tyler’s betrayal. No Tyler being an active character, no Christmas drowning.

What do you think would be different if Tyler had never become a major character? Share your theories in the comments below!
