The Vampire Diaries made a ballsy move in last night’s episode in letting Katherine (Nina Dobrev) successfully claim control of Elena’s body. But what does that mean for our wide-eyed protagonist? Is Elena gone for good?

No, she’s still in there somewhere

We’re not really sure how Mia the Travelers’ spell worked, but — when she completed it — she told Nadia that Katherine now has possession over Elena’s body. This doesn’t rule out the possibility that Elena is still in there somewhere, her soul somehow attached to her body in a permanent way. If this is the case, then there’s still a chance for her to a) fight her way back or b) be recovered by a discerning loved one. We’re kind of hoping for the former — no matter how seemingly unlikely it may be. We totally think Nina Dobrev could handle playing a schizophrenic Katherine/Elena.

Kind of, she’s been banished to the Other Side

What does death really mean on this show? With Bonnie “The Anchor” Bennett and Jeremy “I See Dead People” Gilbert, crossing over to the Other Side doesn’t necessarily mean a character is gone — heck, it doesn’t even mean they can’t attend Mystic Falls house parties. If Elena’s soul has crossed over to the Other Side, perhaps she can make contact with Bonnie and/or Jeremy. From there, it’s only a matter of time before the gang figures something out. This wouldn’t even be the first time the TVDers have brought someone back from the Other Side this season.

Yes, she’s not coming back

It seems extremely unlikely that TVD would write off its main character, but you never know! Perhaps, the spell that destroyed Katherine’s body really did release Elena’s essence into the abyss. We’d be even more seriously impressed with TVD’s balls if this were the case — which is to say: this probably won’t happen.
