At its heart, The Vampire Diaries is centered around the epic love triangle between Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Since Katherine possessed Elena’s body, however, there’s been frighteningly little Delena or Stelena as the 500-year-old vamp does what she does best: mess with other people’s lives. Has Katherine killed the love triangle?

Yes, we don’t see how Stelena or Delena can work out

When Katherine-pretending-to-be-Elena made her move on Stefan in last week’s episode, we couldn’t help but feel like no ship was being served by her actions. Stefan thought he was kissing Elena, but really wasn’t. Katherine got to kiss Stefan, but it was under false pretenses. And Damon was off chomping on vampires. Basically, everyone’s ship is screwed. Though Katherine’s gig will soon be up, we’re not optimistic about Stelena or Delena upon Elena’s return. On the Stelena front, though Stefan seemed to admit that he still has feelings for Elena, he also proved that he doesn’t want to act on them if it will hurt an already-unstable Damon. And his feelings are kind of irrelevant, anyway, because last time we checked, Elena was in love with Damon.

But will she be when she returns and learns everything that Damon has done in her absence? We’re definitely not taking the responsibility away from Damon for his terrible actions in the wake of Katherine-pretending-to-be-Elena’s rejection, he never would have gone off of the deep end if not for Katherine’s scheme. Elena and he would have gotten back together, temporarily quelling the serial killer that is always lurking right below the surface with Damon. Though Elena may still love Damon when she returns, she is going to have a lot to process, and we can’t see the two getting back together anytime soon. Not only did Damon (and everyone else) not notice Elena was gone, but he killed her college friend Aaron and kidnapped her brother. Yeah, Elena’s not going to be happy.

No, the love triangle can survive anything (except the show’s ultimate conclusion)

On the other hand, will this show ever really let go of this love triangle? Nope! Though Stefan might not plan to further upset Damon by giving into his feelings for Elena, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. He barely warded off Katherine’s lips in the last episode. We’re guessing that the further Delena gets from their breakup, the more his resolve will weaken. As for Elena, we could see her totally falling for Stefan again in the wake of such a traumatizing experience. It was her transition to vampirism that worked as a catalyst for her falling out of love with Stefan and into love with Damon. Will her time expelled from her body have a similar effect — but in reverse?

Of course, we’re not completely discounting the Delena passion. Though Damon has been a complete jerk since Elena left, she did say she would stand by him. We’re not saying it’s a healthy decision, but when has that ever stopped Elena before? It may work in Damon’s favor that Elena wasn’t around to witness his jerkiness (unless she could see everything, but not control her body?). Even if these two need to take a break, it’s hard to imagine this being the end of the Delena love affair, especially given that TVD has at least one more season. Basically, we doubt the love triangle will come to an end until the very end of the very last episode, Dawson’s Creek-style. Elena has to choose one of them eventually, right? Will it be Dawson or Pacey?
