Rumor has it there’s a new doppelganger coming to The Vampire Diaries. According to the synopsis for Season 5, Episode 17 (“Rescue Me”), “In order to keep Stefan from being harmed by Sloan and the Travelers, Caroline and Enzo agree to make a trip to Atlanta to find a newly discovered doppelganger.” But who is the new doppelganger? We speculate below!

A Silas doppelganger

We’re inclined to believe that the new doppelganger is of the Silas variety, as it is Stefan whom Caroline and Enzo are trying to swap him for. It’s also totally Paul Wesley’s turn to take on another doppelganger persona. While Nina Dobrev has played Elena, Katherine, and Amara, Paul has only played Stefan and Silas. Nina must be exhausted. It’s Paul’s turn.

An Amara doppelganger

On the other hand, Nina teased not so long ago that there might be another doppelganger for her on the horizon, and we know she can handle it -- especially if Katherine doesn’t make it through the return of Elena. Right now, there are two Petrova doppelganger personalities (Elena and Katherine), but only one Petrova doppelganger body (Elena’s). Now that the TVDers are on to Katherine, it’s only a matter of time before Elena is returned to her rightful place, which is bad news bears for Katherine. On the other hand, this new doppelganger could be the perfect solution. If it’s a Petrova doppelganger, Katherine could have a body identical to her original one without losing the show’s protagonist. Perhaps, this is even the Travelers’ plan. Nadia is a Traveler. Has she commandeered their help to get another body for her mother?

A new kind of doppelganger

We still have much to learn about the doppelganger mythology: like, if Silas and Amara are the only models. Might there be another Traveler who defied mortality and the balance of the universe, setting off a line of doppelgangers over the millennia? Or maybe doppelganger can be created for another reason? If so, we’re putting in our vote for Matt Donovan doppelgangers. Thanks, show.
