We assume there are different directorial styles, ways in which the person responsible for making sure a television episode comes together gets stuff done. Judging from what we’ve seen of the behind-the-scenes shots of Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) as director of Season 5, Episode 18 of The Vampire Diaries, we’re going to go ahead and assume his style is grateful, with a side of snark.

“Candid photo of me on my director chair during filming,” Paul captioned the Instagram photo of himself sitting in a tiny red chair on set. He looks ridiculous, and we kind of love him for that. This isn’t the first photo we’ve seen of Paul getting goofy with his authoritative role.

Last month, Penelope Mitchell (Liv) sent out this tweet complete with photo of Paul pointing sternly at a smirking Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy): “Rocked up at work today to discover that @paulwesley has killed & usurped our director - this place is weird.”

More seriously, Paul seems to have taken to his role as director well -- and we’re not the only ones who think so. Executive producer Julie Plec, tweeted: “According to set, @paulwesley is about to yell "ACTION" on his first shot as a director of #TVD. Way to go, Paul(a), way to go.” Marguerite MacIntyre (aka Sheriff Forbes) gave her vote of approval right away, tweeting: “Worked with an awesome new director yesterday, @paulwesley. #likeaducktowater.”

Paul seems genuinely grateful for the opportunity: “Even though I have been working in TV for years, it ended up being a blessing because I learned invaluable information,” he said. “They finally granted me an episode, which was met with a great deal of excitement and nervousness on my part.” And he’s relatively sure he didn’t screw it up!

Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, March 20 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
