Last night (March 13) was the first time Reign aired a new episode without The Vampire Diaries airing a brand new episode to help bring in the ratings. These two shows have had a great relationship since airing back in October and it’s clear that The CW likes having TVD as the lead-in for one of its successful new shows — but it’s great to hear that the royals can hold their own without the vamps.

According to Headline Planet, Season 1, Episode 14 (“Dirty Laundry”) of the CW show posted a 0.6 in the key demo and brought in 1.65 million viewers. That’s just slightly down from last week’s episode, which brought in 0.7 rating and 1.75 million viewers. The numbers are on par with a few previous episodes though those episodes had new episodes of TVD to help out. Also, because of basketball pre-emptions, the episode could see a greater-than-usual adjustment up.

The Vampire Diaries and Reign have been great Thursday night buddies this TV season, and it’s clear that the network was banking on the fan-favorite show being a strong lead-in for the freshman show. But the network could potentially break this happy marriage up in order to use TVD to help launch another show, moving Reign to a new timeslot and permanently taking away that strong lead-in.

If Reign can continue to post numbers like these without the fangtastic drama, though, it could end up ruling the network for years to come.
