The Vampire Diaries will soon see the introduction of a sexy new villain in Markos (Raffi Barsoumian), the leader of the Travelers. But what is this charismatic leader up to? Here are our top theories.

To kill the doppelgangers

What’s with the Travelers’ obsession with doppelgangers? They either really love them or really hate them. We’re betting on the latter, given that Silas and Katherine were two of their biggest targets before they both died. We think Markos and his legion of followers might be making their way down the doppelganger pecking order. Recently, Sloan sent Caroline to find Stefan’s Atlanta-based doppelganger whom she intends to kill. Sloan is supposed to give Stefan back after this task is fulfilled, but from the sound of this promo, we’re not so sure she will hold up her end of the bargain. In it, we hear Caroline accusingly say: “We had a deal: I find Stefan’s last living doppelganger and, in return, you stop using Stefan to psychically doppel-bomb him.” Is Sloan not giving Stefan back because she plans to kill all of the doppelgangers?

To retrieve someone from the Other Side

We just know the Other Side has something to do with this, we’re just not yet sure what that is. In the same promo, we hear Grams telling Bonnie that “Something’s wrong here,” and Luke informs someone that: “The Travelers are about to make their move. Their leader, Markos, is here.” We think the two are related. Is Markos trying to retrieve someone from the Other Side? It would certainly explain why he needs so much doppelganger blood. Going against the balance of nature tends not only to have intense consequences on this show (i.e. the doppelgangers), but to take a lot of power. From what we know, doppelganger blood is the greatest source of power — powerful enough even to bring someone back from the dead.

To kill all of the vampires

We can’t stop thinking about what part Dr. Wes and his Ripper Virus plays in all of this. If not for the fact that the Travelers funded Dr. Wes’ development of the virus, we’d believe the storyline was over. But why would the Travelers have helped Wes if they didn’t have some interest in the end result? Perhaps it’s not the doppelgangers Markos and the Travelers are planning on destroying, but all vampires by using the doppelgangers and their blood. Bad luck for Stefan and Elena that they happen to fall into both “vampire” and “doppelganger” categories. This is pretty much a lose-lose for them, no matter how this prospective spell ends.

To see Stelena together again

We’re working on another theory: Markos is a total Stelena shipper who won’t rest until he sees his favorite TV couple together again. And there’s evidence! In this promo for Season 5, we hear Markos say: “I’m the reason Stefan and Elena are being drawn together.”  You just know he has a Tumblr account somewhere dedicated to Stelena fanvids, fanfic, and fanart. But, eventually, his Internet outlet just wasn’t enough — he decided to take Stelena’s fate into his own hands. Watch out, Mystic Falls! The biggest Stelena shipper of all is coming for you.
