Bonnie (Kat Graham) has already died once on The Vampire Diaries, and she almost didn’t make it back from it. Arguably, she never really did, now existing as the anchor to the Other Side. Neither fully dead, nor fully alive, Bonnie acts as the portal for any supernatural creature who dies to cross over into the supernatural purgatory. With the Other Side disintegrating, we can’t help but wonder how this will affect our former witch friend. Is Bonnie going to die?
Yes, she can’t survive without the Other Side
We’re not sure we can stress enough just how much the disintegration of the Other Side screws Bonnie over. Even Bonnie’s worried about it. The synopsis for Season 5, Episode 19 (“Man on Fire”) reads: “Bonnie does her best to be realistic about how the changes happening on the Other Side will affect her existence as the Anchor.” Or, you know, her existence, full stop. And Bonnie’s not the only one who looks troubled. As we can see from this promo, Grams pays her granddaughter a visit to let her know things are going to hell. And we doubt she would do that unless she were worried about her granddaughter. Now, all of this might just add up to a Bonnie-in-danger-but-not-dying! plotline, save for the recent tease from executive producer Julie Plec that implies at least one major character will be biting it before the season it out. It’s hard to believe it would be Bonnie; she’s been around since the pilot. But, in many ways, she’s been living on borrowed time since she came back from the dead. And executive producer Caroline Dries teased the possibility of Bonnie’s demise, saying: "We raise the question, 'Can you even kill Bonnie? What would happen? When she's in danger, the whole Other Side is in jeopardy, so it's a big deal to keep her safe.” Bottom line: it’s not looking good for Bon Bon.
No, Bonnie dying is so last season
On the other hand, TVD does like to surprise us and, as much as killing off Bonnie would do that, it’s kind of last season. We think they might go for someone else — maybe even someone they’ve never killed off before. (Yeah, that’s a short list.) Though we think the disintegration of the Other Side would cause Bonnie’s death, we’re not really certain. There’s still so much we don’t know about the Other Side and the anchor, the latter of which was only introduced to us as a concept this season. Perhaps, the disintegration of the Other Side will set Bonnie free, and it might even restore her magic to her. Better yet: give her all of the magic of everyone who was on the Other Side. Season 6 storyline: Bonnie becomes consumed with power, losing her sense of self and becoming the villainous force she was fighting to defend. Now, isn’t that a more interesting option than killing Bonnie off? A little Buffy the Vampire Slayer-esque, yes, but we’ll allow it.
