Few mediums lend themselves to epic romance like serialized television. TV gives us a scale that film cannot. This isn’t a two-hour journey we’re going on with these two characters — it spans years and episodes. But what about The Vampire Diaries’ Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev)? Are they an epic romance or an epic tragedy? We speculate below.
Yes, at least by Logan Echolls’ definition.
According to Veronica Mars’ Logan Echolls, an epic romance is one “spanning years and continents” with “lives ruined, blood shed.” If we’re going by his definition of an epic romance, then Damon and Elena may just make the cut. Though their story has yet to cross continents or even all that many years, they are immortal beings. Give it a few decades and get back to us. As for the “live ruined, blood shed” qualification? They pass with flying colors. We think the point Logan is really trying to get at is that epic romances must go through some serious trials because “no one ever wrote songs about the ones that came easy” and only work out because the couple in question just loves each other so much. You better believe Delena has been through a lot — even though the universe seems to be rooting for Stelena — and that their love is the only thing that might save them.
Maybe. We can’t be sure until the series finale.
But what about Stelena? Who’s to say this isn’t their epic romance that Delena is merely an obstacle in? Because we all know the best epic romances have plenty of obstacles. If you had asked this question a few seasons ago, we would have been relatively positive that TVD was the story of Stelena’s epic romance. Now, we’re not sure what to think, especially with all of this doppelganger prophecy mumbo jumbo getting thrown around. We can’t help but think that we might have to wait until the end of TVD to figure out just whose epic romance we’re watching à la Dawson’s Creek. Until the final minutes of the final episode of the 90s teen drama, we weren’t sure if it was the story of the epic romance between Joey and Pacey or Dawson and Pacey. Was it both? Will TVD be both? Can you be part of an epic TV romance and not end up together? We suppose Buffy and Angel pulled it off. What was our argument again?
No. Their relationship is turning tragic.
Delena seems to be at a vital crossroads in their relationship — namely, because Damon’s character has taken a dive off of the deep end and back into apathetic serial killer mode. To be honest, we’re not quite sure if the show will be able to salvage what’s left of Delena. They are going to have to do some serious work to make us believe that these two work together like they once did. Damon and Elena used to make each other better, but now their once epic romance is just tragic. Because even if they end up together, we don’t think they’ll qualify as the epic TV romance they could have been.
