If you’ve been sensing a quasi-romantic tension building on The Vampire Diaries lately, no that’s not the love triangle. That’s Steroline. Long-time besties Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) have been toeing the romance line in recent episode of Season 5. Will they cross it? Paul tells E! Online what he thinks of the situation.

Paul confesses that he thought the TVD writers would have gotten Steroline together by now, “but it just doesn't seem to be coming into fruition." That being said, he did say that they had recently filmed “a really nice scene” together: It was "platonic, with hints of sexuality, or romance, but it still hasn't really come to fruition the way I thought it would." Story of Season 5 Steroline, amirite?

Paul seems on board the Steroline Romance Bandwagon, save for one qualm: "It's funny to think of it that way just because Candice's fiancé [The Fray's Joe King] is a really good friend of mine," Paul said. "The idea of having to be romantic with Candice on the show is a little daunting, but as far as the characters are concerned, sure, you know?"

Go with that last instinct, Paul. We’re still not entirely sure how we feel about a possible Steroline romantic development (though that station wagon snuggle was one of the best things we’ve seen on TV this year), but that doesn’t mean Paul should be confused. Every actor should want his or her character to be with Caroline without reservation. Duh.

Do you think Stefan and Caroline should get together? Do you think they will? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
