Though the Vampire Diaries actors might not be the ones to decide who their characters will end up with, that doesn’t mean their opinion doesn’t offer us some fascinating insight into their on-screen counterparts. Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) recently talked to TV Guide about his character’s chemistry with bestie Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) and his thoughts on whether they might turn romantic. What did he have to say?!

"They keep hinting at this thing between Caroline and Stefan, yet they don't quite do anything about it; it's funny," Paul said of a possible Steroline romance. "I don't know what to make of it ... I don't know how to take it from best friends to romance, but it'll be interesting if and when they do it. I like when girls lighten [Stefan] up a bit."

So, Paul seems on board with these two turning romantic and, we have to admit — after that station wagon snuggling scene — we’re more open to the idea. There hasn’t been a romance that’s felt fresh and compelling on this show for far too long. On the other hand, we love that TVD has kept these two as platonic pals in a TV landscape known for throwing any two attractive pair of young people together to pass the episodes.

Whatever eventually happens with Steroline, it seems like they are still firmly in the friend zone in tonight’s episode: Season 5, Episode 18 (“Resident Evil”). The installment will see Caroline trying to help both Stefan and Elena figure out what the heck is going on when they start having shared visions of their could-be life together. Though this has the potential to address any romantic stirrings Stefan and Caroline may have for one another, we have a feeling it will focus more on the effects these visions have on Delena than they do on Steroline.
