The plot thickened on the most recent episode of The Vampire Diaries when it was revealed super hybrid Tyler (Michael Trevino) has been possessed by a Passenger. With everyone trying to figure out just what the Travelers are up to, how long will it be before Tyler’s Passenger is discovered.

Precedent: Elena. We’d like to think that Tyler’s friends are going to notice within five minutes that Ty has been possessed by a Traveler. Unfortunately, we have the Elena/Katherine debacle as precedent to know that even when they aren’t distracted by the entire town’s possession via Traveler, they aren’t the most astute social circle. It took episodes for the fang gang to realize Katherine was possessing Elena, and that was only after Matt managed to send a one-letter clue to Caroline. Plus, the Travelers have had loads of practice pretending to be other people. Let’s face it: Tyler probably shouldn’t be waiting around for his friends to figure this one out.

They already stabbed him. Another factor working against Tyler is the fact that Liv already stabbed him with the Traveler life, ensuring that at the time, he hasn’t been possessed by a Passenger. Unfortunately, a few scenes later, Tyler’s Passenger Status had changed. Furthermore, the Passenger knife has been destroyed, which means that even if Liv is paranoid enough to stab her teammates daily to ensure they haven’t been possessed, she no longer can. Bummer.

The theft of the knife. Though the theft and subsequent destruction of the Traveler knife is mostly bad news, it has a silver lining: when the gang realizes it is gone, hopefully, they will begin to ask questions about how it disappeared from right under their noses. If and when this happens, it is only a matter of time before Tyler’s Passenger is discovered.

Caroline could come to the rescue. Tyler also has someone else on his side: a former girlfriend as discerning as Caroline. Caroline has already been through this friend-possessed-by-Passenger nonsense once with Elena, which means she can recognize the signs and, you know, acknowledge the possibility. Furthermore, she is now on High Alert, and is just the kind of person to recognize when her ex-boyfriend is acting strangely.

Unfortunately, it might not be in time. We’re counting on Caroline to figure this out, but we’re kind of worried she still might not be in a position to save Tyler. The synopsis for Season 5, Episode 21 (“Promised Land”) tells us: “Caroline is witness to an unthinkable act of violence by one of the Travelers.” Is the Traveler in question the one inhabiting Tyler’s body? Does this mean she has it figured out by Episode 21? And what will Possessed Tyler do?

When do you think the gang will figure out Tyler has a Passenger? Is there anything they can do about it? Share your theories in the comments below!
