Just when we thought The Vampire Diaries had lost its touch for introducing new, recurring characters, they gave us Luke (Chris Brochu) and Liv (Penelope Mitchell),  the Wonder Twins. The witch siblings are snarky, powerful, and will do anything for one another. Oh, and they’re determined to keep the Travelers from succeeding in their mission. We would could get used to having these two around, but will we have the chance to? Will Luke and Liv survive Season 5?

Well, the good news is that Liv and Luke will at least make it to the Season 5 finale. The synopsis for the episode tells us: “Elena takes matters into her own hands and demands that Liv and Luke help her, but Liv refuses to cooperate until Caroline provides her with some personal motivation.” Sounds like someone will be threatening Luke’s life. Again. We love that he is the go-to hostage of the two, the role traditionally reserved for the sister rather than the brother. Still, aren’t these two supposed to be powerful? How come he keeps letting people kidnap him?

Anyway, the reason we are oh-so-worried about the wonder twins is because it seems like they may officially be leaving Team Hero Hair as the stakes rise and the Travelers move ever-closer to succeeding in their goal. In the promo photos for Season 5, Episode 21(“Promised Land”), we see Luke and Liv (awesomely) teaming up to do some magic on Elena. The synopsis tells us: “After their attempt to protect the dopplegangers goes badly, Liv and Luke come up with a dangerous new strategy.” Yikes! Does their dangerous new strategy involve killing the doppelgangers? Do they partially succeed?

The reason why Luke and Liv’s allegiance is important is because, despite all of the terrible things that happen to our heroes, they tend to eventually come out on the winning side — even if they’re all turned into vampires, partially dead, or temporarily locked inside of a safe and then thrown to the bottom of a quarry before they get there. If Luke and Liv officially ally themselves against our heroes, then we’re not sure how long they’ll get to stick around. Let’s face it: everyone but the main characters are expendable on this show. And, sometimes, not even them.

On the other hand, there has been some talk of major character deaths before Season 5 ends — and those deaths will actually stick. If this is the case, then Liv and Luke might actually stand a chance of surviving into Season 5. Though, is it totally cruel if we confess that not both of them will? Tragic.

Do you think Liv and Luke will make it to Season 6? Why or why not? Share your theories in the comments below!
