Vampire Diaries has promised multiple character deaths before the close of Season 5 and, with the Other Side in full-on chaos and death meaning even less than it already did on this show, it’s more likely than ever before that one of those deaths could come in the form of a main cast member. Will Damon (Ian Somerhalder) die in the Season 5 finale?

Yes, all signs point to his sacrifice. Check out the synopsis for the Season 5 finale: “Damon comes up with a dangerous plan that relies on split-second timing from Jeremy and Matt … Damon’s plan causes a massive explosion in Mystic Falls, and everyone is caught up in the confusion, leaving a trail of heroism, sacrifice, relief and despair." Explosion?! Sacrifice?! Add this vague description to the tease that Damon will be donning his “hero hair” for the episode, and we are officially worried. It seems insane that TVD would kill off one of its most important characters, but death doesn’t mean leaving the show on TVD. It means another way of being for your character. Even Bonnie spent the first quarter of the season as a ghost only Jeremy could see.

If Damon does die, it is neither permanent nor character-ending. In fact, it might just mean he is hanging on the Other Side (or whatever is on the other side of the Other Side) for awhile. Paul Wesley told TV Guide that "[The finale] definitely establishes new parameters in the environment we'll be shooting in Season 6. They reset things in a way, and the writers have the ability to now change the circumstances and locations of where the show takes place." We think both Damon and Bonnie may be dying in the Season 5 finale, and be heading to a whole new locale in Season 6.

No, Damon will never die. Of course, heroism and sacrifice don’t always end in one’s death. Sometimes, the sacrifice is the death of injury of those closest to you. Or the destruction of places you hold dear. It sounds like Mystic Falls is going ka-boom in the Season 5 finale. Does this include the Salvatore mansion? Don’t think it’s escaped our notice that this episode’s title is “Home.” Does this refer to Damon’s house, Mystic Falls in general, or something more nebulous. Perhaps, Damon considers Damon his home. Perhaps, he will be asked to sacrifice her (figuratively, not literally), letting her go for her own sake and the sake of everyone else he begrudgingly cares about. Perhaps, he will have to find a new home.
