During tonight’s Season 5 finale of The Vampire Diaries, most of our Mystic Falls friends made their way over to the Other Side in an elaborate attempt to stop the Travelers from taking over the town for good. One of this big surprises was that our favorite high school history teacher happened to make his way back to the land of the living before the portal through Bonnie (Kat Graham) closed for good. That’s right, folks. Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) is back in action!

According to TV Guide, we’ll be seeing more of Alaric next year because Matt Davis is returning as a series regular — too bad his drinking buddy, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) is seemingly dead or at least permanently stuck in another realm. At least we know he’ll fit right back in with the crew, especially after seeing him comfort Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) as she ugly-cried about losing Damon.

We first met Alaric midway during Season 1. Remember how he was a vampire hunter? History teacher by day, hunter of bloodsucking fiends by night — you know, just your average dude. He went through a wild storyline and finally died in the Season 3 finale, though he returned twice as a ghost in Season 4. We even got to see a touching scene (involving alcohol) between him and Damon in the 100th episode this year.

So, are we ready to have him back next season? You betcha!

Are you glad Alaric is back on the show? What do you hope to see from him next season? Hit the comments and let us know!
