Ever since Paul Wesley mentioned that Season 6 would establish “new parameters” for The Vampire Diaries, we’ve been wondering if the upcoming season might take place at least partially on the Other Side, the supernatural purgatory that has become more and more integral to the plot of the vampire drama. With the Season 5 finale set to air tonight, we speculate about what might happen after the episode fades to black. Will Season 6 take place on the Other Side?

Yes, too many characters are set to cross over

Stefan’s dead. Bonnie is kind of dead. And we’re set to see more character deaths in tonight’s season-ender. Unless TVD pulls some fast magic, this cast of characters is about to get a lot less robust. TVD has toyed with using the Other Side as a setting before. At the beginning of Season 5, Bonnie was more-or-less living in the supernatural purgatory, visible only to Jeremy on this mortal coil. We have seen more and more of the mysterious other realm since then, through Matt’s deaths while waiting for the Gilbert Ring to bring him back to life, Bonnie’s discussions with supernatural spirits crossing over, and Enzo’s recent shenanigans as a ghost. It’s not so far-fetched to think Season 6 might increase the time spent over there, especially if so many of its characters are set to stay dead. Perhaps, the central question of the first act of Season 6 will be how to return from the supernatural purgatory.

No, that’s too much — even for this show

On the other hand, the Other Side mythology has been some of the weakest stuff this season. It feels muddled and thinly-drawn — in other words, not the kind of set-up undertaken for a setting that will soon become so important. Though this show has proven itself capable of taking risks, those risks tend to come in the killing off of characters, not so much an abrupt change to the very structure of the show. We’re not sure we can imagine TVD taking a creative leap like this after so many years of established setting.

Maybe — according to the Powers That Be

On the subject of the possibility of Season 6 set in another world, executive producer Caroline Dries told TV Guide: "It won't explore where Vicki disappeared to [in Episode 18], but we will be seeing a lot of newness in Season 6. The finale will have major effects on our characters and they all will have their own way of dealing and moving on. We think of it as the college metaphor. You leave for college and then when you come home to visit, everything feels a little different and eventually you realize you don't really live there anymore." Caroline has ruled out a season set on the other side of the Other Side, but not the supernatural purgatory itself. So, maybe?
