UPDATE: It looks like Tyler’s life has been spared! The former (???) hybrid made his way back to Mystic Falls from the Other Side through Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) just before the portal closed. When he made it back, however, it was pretty clear that he was different somehow. He took a rock and cut his hand open, but he never began healing. It looks like homeboy isn’t a hybrid anymore — but does it mean he’s human?

Original Story: We knew going into the Season 5 finale of The Vampire Diaries that there would be three permanent deaths — but we weren’t prepared for one to happen within the first 10 minutes! Who was the first character to bite the dust tonight? Read on to find out!

As expected, Tyler (Michael Trevino) was the first person to die in tonight’s climactic conclusion, getting pushed inside the Mystic Falls city lines and having his neck snapped — you know, the way he died way back in the day. No-magic zones suck, don’t they?

Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) is the one to blame for having his lackeys bring Tyler to his doom — and sadly Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) had to watch the terrible turn of events. Now that we’ve seen just how far Markos will go, we’re definitely worried to see how this episode will end up. Just because we thought Tyler would die doesn’t mean it hurts any less.
