Though Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) may be mourning the apparent loss of his friends from The Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale, he got what he wanted in the de-magicking of Mystic Falls. What will his character look like come Season 6? Executive producer Julie Plec talked to TVLine on the subject.

“Weirdly enough, in spite of the grief attached to the circumstance of what happened, Matt Donovan came out the other side in the strongest way,” Julie teased. “He’s in a town with no supernatural entities, he’s out of high school, he’s grown into a young man, and he begins to find his way as he steps out on a new career path that might lead him to being someone you’d like to have protecting you in the town of Mystic Falls. He’s living a pretty decent life, so it’s sad that his friends can’t be there with him, but at least it’s peaceful.”

Wait...does this mean Matt might be coming a Mystic Falls cop? Does this mean Sheriff Forbes didn’t make it? And, on a side note, is does the Gilbert ring work in Mystic Falls anymore? (Probably not.) How long is this summer hiatus again...we’re not sure if we can wait months to find out the answers to these questions.

Matt’s potential transition into law enforcement actually makes a lot of sense for his character. He not only seems to have natural protective instincts for his friends and neighbors, but has accumulated quite a bit of fighting villainy and defending himself in the last few years. Though, with the elimination of the supernatural element from Mystic Falls, we can’t imagine the crime rate will be that high.
