Perhaps you’ve heard that Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries will take place after a “substantial time jump” from the Season 5 finale? Well, along with that time jump will come a new start for many of the characters we’ve known and loved over the past five season. In the wake of the tragic consequences of the Season 5 finale, those still living are learning how to live again without their friends. What will that look like? Executive producer Julie Plec weighs in!

"The way we look at it, Season 6 is a beautiful and organic reset,” Julie told The Hollywood Reporter. “The theme of the season is everybody gets to start over. That's what we're going to do.” Bring on the fresh starts! Sure, we hope TVD keeps much of the style and substance that has made it such an enjoyable ride over the last five years, but we think it’s past time the vampire drama mixed up its formula a bit. Coming-of-age love triangles can only sustain so many seasons, you know?

So, what might these new starts look like? Well, Julie wasn’t spilling many details, but she did have this to say: “Again, the surprise of how each of these characters is dealing with it and where they are and how they're living their lives is how we're going to get the season started,” adding that “a big theme of season six is second chances.” Two of the most obvious second chances come in the returns of Alaric (Matt Davis) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) from the dead. Both of these actors have been upped to series regulars for Season 6, which we couldn’t be more excited about, and seems to bode well for a TVD promising to take the show in fresh directions. Now we just have to make it through the hiatus to find out what those fresh directions might look like…
