We weren’t the only ones impressed by The Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale. The episode earned five awards in Entertainment Weekly’s fifth annual Season Finale Awards, including two for the finale scene: Best Final Shot and Best (Presumed) Death or Exit. What did director Chris Grismer have to say about those final moments as Damon and Bonnie held hands and met their fate?

Chris called into EW to accept the awards, and gave the lowdown on how the show pulled off that final fade-to-white: “We just sort of over-exposed it, just old-school, and used smoke, and then I just had them grab the cameras and shake them,” Chris said, with a laugh. “The weird thing about it was the actors couldn’t hear each other because we had fans going and it was just pure chaos. So they kinda had to guess when it was their turn to talk, and then we dubbed their voices afterward.” We think they did pretty well. We never would have guessed shooting that final scene was so hectic!

TVD also snagged quite a few awards for the scene in which Ghost Damon and Elena say goodbye to one another, the latter without actually being able to see her boyfriend. The scene scored the awards for “Most Rewound Moment” and “Most Unforgettable Line” for Damon’s insistence that he has peaked in the aforementioned scene, and “Best Use of Music.” We’re not sure how many times we want to rewind that kind of heartbreak, but we support the sentiment. As far as tear-jerking goodbyes go, that one was perfect.

Did you have any idea the strategies that went into filming that last scene? How many times did you rewind Delena’s goodbye? Sound off in the comments below!
