One of our favorite transformations on The Vampire Diaries — barring Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) epic metamorphosis into a werewolf, of course — was Caroline Forbes’ shift from bitchy, insecure cheerleader to self-confident vampire woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Candice Accola tells Zap2It her character’s major changes have a lot to do with the astronomical level of betrayal she’s experienced this season. As we all know, her one major confidant all season, Tyler Lockwood, completely hung her out to die (er, dry). "I think a big turning point in the character of Caroline was when Tyler didn't rescue her from the cage," Candice says.

While the Caroline we used to know (and still somehow loved) might have freaked out on account of Tyler’s shotty, selfish move, the new one took it all in stride and even grew stronger as a result.

"I think it was that moment of her saying 'No, this is not how friends treat other friends,' as opposed to being like 'Oh, it's okay, we can be friends now, everything's okay,'" Candice says. "No, she stood up for herself. And i think that when she slammed that door it was also shutting the door on a lot of insecurities. She grew up a lot in that moment. I loved it."

We loved that newly-fearless Caroline told Tyler off, too — but we’re still sad we don’t know where exactly he went “off” to.
