The Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 14, “Dangerous Liaisons” wasn’t just full of twists and turns, it was also bursting with hot hairstyles, decadent costumes, and — of course — more than enough champagne laced with the blood of the doppelganger to go around. What else would one expect from a Mystic Falls ball?
But all the chic soirée wear didn’t come easy. In a new interview with Zap2It, TVD costume designer extraordinaire Leigh Leverett explained the process of how she decided to dress the characters, especially since it’s sometimes hard to find quality pieces in Atlanta, GA, where the show is filmed.
As Leverett explains, "We don't have all the fantastic L.A. and New York shopping. And sometimes when you are trying to buy dark colors in the spring you can run into problems because everything is bright and pastel-y."
Those tones weren’t in the dress code for the Mikaelsons’ traditional and somewhat somber housewarming, where most everyone donned dark hues. That’s no mistake: Leverett says she pulled inspiration from another supernatural tale for the formal wear. "We used Beauty and the Beast as a reference to mix it up from the slinky evening wear you normally see on the show," she says.
So, after channeling her inner Belle and scouring Atlanta’s two mega malls, Leverett was able to pull in the perfect pieces to craft luxurious looks for our clan of supernaturals.
Elena Gilbert: "Elena is wearing a vintage dress that is from a great place in Atlanta called Miz Scarletts. She sells really expensive dresses from London and Paris, and the place is just this beautiful fantasy world of tulle and beading and really pretty stuff.”
Caroline Forbes: "This dress we got from Alberto Makali, the designer. What I love about Caroline's dress is the way it's cut and the silver beading. The silver and blue — I don't know how to put it in words — a lot of times in shopping it just hits me that it's perfect for that character."
