As if they’d let Elena (Nina Dobrev) really die on The Vampire Diaries. That’s as crazy as when everyone panicked and thought Damon (Ian Somerhalder) would actually succumb to his werewolf bite in TVD’s Season 2 finale. Death is often a temporary condition in Mystic Falls, and when we return in Season 4, Elena will be transitioning into a vampire.

TV Guide spoke to executive producer Julie Plec, who said, "It will be a very emotional, very complicated first episode when the show returns, but Elena's future is pretty set.” We’re excited to see how she’ll take to her bloodsucking, but we’re also intrigued about how her new supernatural state will affect the choice she made — Stefan (Paul Wesley) over Damon — while she was still human.

"That's the best question of all!" Plec says, saying that "everything has changed. Not necessarily how she feels about the boys, but who she is. This may bring her closer than ever to Stefan, or it may give her a deeper bond with Damon. Plus, she'll start learning things, like how Damon compelled her to forget their first meeting. Those memories will come back, and it'll add more fuel to the fire."

All the romance will probably be a little ways down the road, since we pick up almost exactly where we left off. Perhaps E will just need a little time to fly solo and figure out how not to kill her baby bro in a fit of hunger…
