As we learned in Vampire Diaries Season 2, Episode 9, “Katerina,” wicked vamp Katherine (Nina Dobrev) was born Katerina Petrova in 1475 in Bulgaria. However, in the original book series, Katherine — and her doppelganger Elena (Nina Dobrev) — are of German descent, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Even her last name was different: She was known as Katherine Von Schwarzschild.

So why the change? Well, the writers were clearly inspired by Nina Dobrev herself. The brunette beauty was born in Bulgaria in 1989, before moving to Canada at the age of 2.

You can watch Nina speak Bulgarian here. She’s so multi-talented!
