In the land of the supernatural, just about anything can happen. Nobody is ever truly safe because tragedy, vampire bites, and wooden stakes are the usual order of the day (er, episode).

The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec admits it’s not easy to stay alive on a show like hers. Yeah, sometimes characters are safe for a (long) minute, but the brutal truth about TVD is you just never know who’s gonna go next. “Anything can happen at any time, and not everybody’s going to like it,” she tells Show Tracker. And considering about 20 characters are chillin’ in Mystic Falls as we speak, Plec says “a percentage of them... will not make it to Season 3.”

But like we said, anything can happen, and sometimes characters who get the axe come back (from the dead or otherwise) for a second go-round. We know Trevor is making an appearance later this season via flashback, and writers made it almost too easy to bring Elijah back — all they have to do is have someone pull out the dagger. Still, Plec says maybe kicking the bucket isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative. “Something that we’ll explore in the future once we get into Klaus and the world of the Originals and future seasons is that’s true immortality,” teases Plec. “How lonely must that be?”
