Kat Graham arrived at Perez Hilton’s birthday festivities on Saturday night clad in an alluring vintage green jacket and matching emerald eye shadow. She later emerged on stage in a glitzy bra, shorts, and a Mad Hatter cap to perform a three-song set. In an exclusive post-performance interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, Kat divulged her secrets to juggling her role of Bonnie Bennett on The Vampire Diaries with her up-and-coming singing career.
Wetpaint Entertainment: How do you balance your music career with your acting career? Is it hard?
Kat Graham: Yeah which is why I’m glad that we’re going on a hiatus because I’m like, “Oh my gosh. This is really crazy!” I try not to balance it. I try and just do one at a time. I really do. I don’t think it’s fair to my acting and I don’t think it’s fair to my music and I just need to focus on one thing and be great at that. They say you can’t be great doing multiple things simultaneously, you have to pick one and focus on it, which is what I’ll be doing all summer.
Are they both as equal of a priority to you?
Yeah. I’ve been doing acting since I was 6 years old and I don’t know how to do anything besides act and sing, Back in the day you had to do it all — you had to sing, dance, and act. I’m from the old school where that is what I was trained to do and that’s what I am expected to do so it’s weird when people ask me to choose.
Is there anyone in Hollywood that you look up to as a role model for both singing and acting?
I almost get frustrated when they ask me to choose because it’s like eventually the people that are the greatest to me have done it all — like the Will Smiths and Janets. Even Michael was an actor and 2Pac. If you’re African American, actually it’s a little more common than people think.
So you’re working on a new album this summer?
Yeah I’m like 40 songs in right now. We’re just shooting for singles and making sure that we have something that connects to the people.
Are you just going to release singles or a full album?
I’m going to release a full album. Right now we really want to focus on having “Graffiti” stick and people really being moved by it and getting into it.
Are you going to tour at all?
Yeah. I’m just doing promo dates right now. I just did South by Southwest last week and I did Perez’s show tonight and as much as I can.
