With a hectic schedule that involves filming for The Vampire Diaries and making music in the studio, Kat Graham doesn’t exactly have a lot of free time on her hands. However, the multi-talented star is making space in her busy life to connect with her young fans, especially over topics that weren’t easy to discuss while she was growing up.

Teaming up with U by Kotex, Kat’s speaking out about the Generation Know campaign and is hoping to empower girls about their bodies. “I wanted to help young girls the way I wish I was helped when I was 14 or 15,” the 23-year-old star tells HollywoodLife.com. “I want to break down these barriers with them.”

As a homeschooled student without any sisters to seek advice from, Kat didn’t get a lot of the “girl talk” that would’ve made her teenage years easier to deal with. “I learned about things the hard way,” she reveals. “I found out what a period was when I got one. I don’t want anyone to go through that and if you grow up as an only child or if you’re homeschooled or if you don’t have a lot of friends, I think Generation Know is really helpful.”

On top of wanting to inform young women about important issues, Kat hopes to instill confidence in a generation that often feels not good enough, smart enough, or thin enough. “As long as [my decisions are] coming absolutely from me 100 percent, that’s what makes me feel empowered. I’m not making them for a boy, I’m making them for a career move.” It’s this courage and assurance in herself that she hopes to pass down to the thousands of girl who look up to her.
