Anyone who’s watched The Vampire Diaries has noticed at least two things: Ian Somerhalder (Damon’s) piercing eyes — and Nina Dobrev’s (Elena) luscious brown locks.

Ever wondered how Nina keeps her ‘do looking fresh and fabulous all the time? Well, ‘do’ not be fooled — it takes a very conscious effort.

According to InStyle, Nina takes special precautions to stay away from blow dryers, hair straighteners, and other heated styling tools. On top of that, the brunette beauty washes her hair three times a week, but swaps shampoo with some kind of hair mask — namely, a Keratin treatment, Softa Treatment by Unite, or a MoroccanOil hair mask — every third wash.

Sounds like serious stuff, but Nina has fun with it. She jokes she’ll sometimes spread on the hair mask, pull a shower cap on and drive to work that way. “I look like an old lady!” she says.

In the end, the extra effort (and peering eyes on the way to work, we assume) pays off. “It’s been a dream of mine to be a L’Oreal or Pantene girl,” Nina admits. (We knew it!) “That’s why I’m keeping it healthy — and long — until they ask me. That’s my incentive.”
