Warning! Spoilers for The Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 12, “A View to a Kill”!

You must admit, Stefan (Paul Wesley) was in a tough spot. He’d just sealed the deal with Rebekah (Claire Holt), and though they’d promised to keep emotions separate, that didn’t exactly give him free rein to dagger the girl.

After the ‘80s Decade Dance was cancelled, the pair spent a luftballon-filled evening dancing to Bon Jovi. All along, Stefan planned to have Matt (Zach Roerig) stick a dagger in the Original sister, neutralizing the threat she’d pose once Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) was dead.

But somewhere between the nostalgic movie reviews and the Breakfast Club slide, Stefan decided to let Bex stay out of a coffin — for now.

Even though she learned her brother had been killed, Rebekah told Stefan she was still on his side and wanted to help find the cure. Perhaps she’s sincere — or maybe she’s plotting some revenge.

It was a risky call on Stefan’s part, but was it the right one?
