The Vampire Diaries writers have been hard at work for weeks now, and they finally have some spoilery stuff to report. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The thing that’s been on every body’s mind since May — when Jeremy Gilbert’s vampire exes, Anna and Vicki, dropped in rather unexpectedly —  is why the heck is Jeremy seeing dead people?

TVD producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson both weighed in on Jeremy’s undead drama. When we first come back, Plec tells Entertainment Weekly, “we’ll see that he still hasn’t had any success figuring out what it is that they want, or understanding even what it is that they are.” Plus, Plec hints that Jeremy has been keeping his sixth sense a secret, so while everybody around him is “starting to wonder if he’s perhaps getting back into some old bad habits ... in reality, he’s just trying to figure out why the hell he’s being haunted by his dead girlfriends.” Poor Jer.

But viewers won’t have to wait long to discover the truth. Come October, we’ll get to “the climax of the haunting of Jeremy,” according to Williamson. “Are they there for good? Are they there for bad? It will once again be another twisty story.” But the part we like best? Williamson says the culmination “involves some unlikely participants,” meaning more deceased darlings could be showing up. (Our fingers are crossed for Aunt Jenna!)

As for what all this means for Jeremy’s current gf Bonnie, well, let’s just say it won’t be the same smooth sailing we saw before. Writers want to beef up Bonnie’s character, turning her from the “resident witch” to a girl “[exploring] some good relationship stuff.” Sounds difficult, but we are so down for more slumber party scenes where Bonnie can talk out her boy problems with Caroline and Elena. (Though we’re not sure how willing E will be to get the details on her little bro’s love life…)
