The Vampire Diaries Season 3 premiere was heart-wrenching. Sure, there were a few moments that lit us up (hello, sudsy, naked Damon and that Caroline/Tyler hookup!), but those were overshadowed by the dismal phone call between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) near the end. Ripper Stefan spent most of the episode making us cringe, but we did feel a glimmer of hope that things could go back to normal when he dialed Elena’s number. He didn’t actually say anything when he called, but he really didn’t have to. The fact that he rang her up at all shows there’s still a teensy part of Stefan that’s rational — and in love with Elena.

But Paul Wesley revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Stelena ‘shippers shouldn’t get their hopes up for a reunion anytime soon. Even if he is still thinking of Elena from time to time, the younger Salvatore is physically — and emotionally — disconnected from everyone he loves right now.

“I hate to be cheesy, but on a symbolic level, he’s really apart from everybody. He’s physically apart for a while, in a different location, but he’s in a completely different space,” he says. “He and Elena were just not what they were.”

The separation “could go on indefinitely,” Wesley says, and there is a moment when Stefan convinces himself to stop thinking about Elena. “I think he thinks he has to because he forces himself to [forget her], and circumstances force it, too.”

While the fans might not be too keen on the new side of this Salvatore, Wesley is particularly stoked for an upcoming episode that “shows a side of Stefan that we haven’t seen before,” adding that it was “the most fun” he’s ever had shooting for TVD. “It’s a scene where I’m basically saying goodbye to my old self,” he says. OK, we’ll admit it. At the very least, we’re intrigued.
