Watching a beloved character die is now a rite of passage for 'Vampire Diaries' fans, since writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec have proven time and time again that no one in Mystic Falls is safe from the grim reaper. So when Mason Lockwood met his untimely demise at the hands of Damon Salvatore on last week's episode -- literally, Damon used his hands to rip Mason's heart out -- it was an unexpected yet ultimately unsurprising moment.

But that didn't make Mason's loss sting any less. When Taylor Kinney, the actor who played Mason, called TV Squad on Friday to talk about his character's death, he understood our pain. "I'm in heaven now," he said. Interesting. That's where Mason went? "Or hell. I don't know."

Did you know from the very beginning what would happen to Mason?
I knew vaguely, but there's an outline. Episode to episode, they release scripts a few weeks before you move on to shoot another one. So we'd get these scripts and read them, and for pretty much everybody in the entire cast it's this relief where you're like "Oh, I'm in the next episode? Cool." I think as eveyone's well aware of, anyone can get killed off this show. I found out maybe a month beforehand and just didn't say anything to anybody. I got a couple of really soft pats on the back from people in the crew, the silent head nod and the "Sorry bro." Or you just act like you don't know and then they feel like an ass.
