There was really only one real logic fail in The Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 20, “The Originals,” and that’s Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) were-brid baby. What the what?!
Klaus has been cruising through life, never using protection for his casual encounters. Why would he? He’s an immortal hybrid who can’t get STDs. And babies? Everyone knows vampires can’t procreate — though they love to try, right, Damon (Ian Somerhalder)?
Then along comes Fertile Myrtle, aka Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). She and Klaus have one night of liquored-up passion, and bam! It’s baby-town. We’ll say it again: What the what?!
First of all, Klaus has never knocked up anyone before now? He’s been celibate throughout most of his time on TVD, but surely Hayley didn’t take his V-card. If hybrids really can make babies — and part of us is hoping Maury Povich will declare that Klaus is not the father — then shouldn’t the Original have some more offspring somewhere? Is it only werewolf women whom he can impregnate, or can he have little semi-supernatural babies with humans, too? We have so many questions.
While we trust that Klaus’s kid will be an interesting addition to The Originals spin-off, simply subverting all the supernatural rules set in place to make it so was jarring to say the least. We’re not sure we buy the witch logic that Klaus was a werewolf before he became a vampire and thus is a baby-making machine. After all, he did die and come back before those wolfy genes were triggered, and he spent at least some time as a full-fledged vampire. Did switching on his werewolf side also reawaken something in his, um, anatomy? Color us confused.
And one last thing: Klaus doesn’t need an heir. He’s immortal.
