Since we’re all so attached to each and every character on The Vampire Diaries, no death that’s hit the screen has been an easy one to contend with. Except for maybe the death of Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning). We kid! Still, death has become inextricably linked to Mystic Falls and its denizens. It is a part of, if you’ll pardon the cliche, life for our favorite gaggle of immortals and their pals.
That doesn’t mean that the passing of a friend has become something to yawn over. Exhibit the death of Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). It hit everyone hard: Matt (Zach Roerig) was man-weeping in his pickup truck, Bonnie (Kat Graham) was enthralled unto Silas and convinced that it would be totally cool to kill 12 witches if it meant getting her on-again off-again boyfriend back. Most infamously of all, Jeremy’s death proved to be a breaking point for Elena (Nina Dobrev), who fell into such hair-grabbing howls of emotions (Read: “Ican’tIcan’tIcan’tIcan’t”) that the brothers Salvatore had to sire bond the feelings — and the humanity — right out of her.
But in this world where nothing supernatural is surprising, let alone off-limits, we know that dead doesn’t always equal gone forever. Does this mean we stand a shot at seeing Jeremy again, and as more than just a ploy used by Silas to get to Bonnie? In Season 4, Episode 22, “The Walking Dead,” Bonnie drops the veil to the other side. But Candice Accola (Caroline Forbes) teased that not every dead vampire, witch, etc. will descend upon Mystic Falls.
Still, the little Gilbert’s return isn’t entirely outside the realm of possibility, story-wise. Jeremy has had a connection to the Other Side ever since Bonnie saved him from death-by-bullet. Of course, it was this spell that had him seeing dead people. Specifically, seeing ex-girlfriends. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don’t do spells to bring your boy-toy back from the grave.
With Jeremy’s natural disposition to commune with the dead a part of his past, and his recent foray into being one of the chosen vampire hunters, he is far from being your average Joe. Between that and his intense feelings for Bonnie it wouldn’t be surprising if he helped her in his mission to send Silas to the Other Side without letting the deceased supernaturals run wild and free on earth. After all, anything is possible.
