We’ve been running a cure bracket to find out who fans want to take the cure on The Vampire Diaries. In the first round, Stefan (Paul Wesley) was knocked out when he went up against Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic).

This surprised us a bit, and we couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if the younger Salvatore had to take the cure for some reason. Here’s what we think would occur:

1. Denial.

Stefan’s been a vampire so long, he’s forgotten how to be human. There would likely be a lot of trial and error as he learned to run like a normal person again, stopped absentmindedly reaching for bunnies every time he got thirsty, and figured out how to use band-aids for those nasty paper cuts that won’t instantly heal anymore.

2. Guilt.

Stefan has wanted the cure for Elena (Nina Dobrev) since he first heard the thing existed. It’s her one shot of at being human, and he was willing to give up his own desire to return to the land of the living for her. If he gets the does instead of her, it’s definitely going to keep him up at night.

3. Bargaining

The Salvatore brothers are usually pretty loyal to each other, and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will probably be unhappy that his brother is suddenly mortal. He’ll try to find a way to get his bro another set of fangs — whether Stefan wants them or not.

4. Acceptance

Stefan did tell Elena and Rebekah (Claire Holt) he wanted the cure for himself, too. In his opinion, it’s miserable being a vampire and he longs to escape the guilt of his Ripper days. Maybe he’d be happy if he finally got what he wanted — for a while.

5. Regression

This is The Vampire Diaries. There’s no way Stefan would remain human forever.
