We love those moments on The Vampire Diaries that make us gasp, pause, and rewind — and Season 4, Episode 13, “Into the Wild” is chock full of them. Here are the scenes that left our jaws agape.

5. Shane’s wife touches his cheek
Love makes people do crazy things. It made Professor Shane (David Alpay) trek to a remote island where he ran the gauntlet through woods filled with angry islanders. Then he rappelled down into a cave, nearly killing himself, so he could see his beloved again. It was, as they say, a tender moment. “Can you feel my touch?” Shane’s wife asked as she placed her hand on his cheek. The only reason this ranks as an OMG is because, well, technically, the nutty professor’s wife had died a year earlier. Yet there he was, seeing and talking to her again — thanks to the blood donation he made to the magic well above Silas’s grave. During their reunion, Caitlin told him to kill dozens of people and gather a variety of weird stuff so that she could raise the first immortal man (Silas) who would, in turn, bring her back to life. Sounds crazy to us. But not Shane. The Ph.D spent the next year doing as he was told. Now we know we can blame the crazy on Shane’s dead wife.

4. Bonnie blazes a trail to Jeremy (or so it seems)
Holy burning bush! After Little Gilbert went missing from their camp, Bonnie (Kat Graham) took one of Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) shirts, knelt in front of the campfire, closed her eyes, and did some witchy juju. Then she tossed the shirt into the flames. A second later, a red-hot trail appeared. The fire cut through the woods without burning them, leading the witch of Mystic Falls to her ex-boyfriend. We guess that’s what you really call being hot for a guy’s bod.

3. Elena almost bites it
As Rebekah (Claire Holt), Stefan (Paul Wesley), and Elena (Nina Dobrev) searched for Jeremy, the lady vamps bickered annoyingly. “Alright, we get it. You two hate each other,” Stefan said. But we think hate might be too strong a word. Seconds later, the Original sister got the chance to eliminate her enemy by allowing Elena to die. But she didn’t. When the young Miss Gilbert tripped the wire on a punji trap — launching a tree branch full of stakes right at her heart — the young vampire did not move fast enough. But Bekah did. She reached out and caught the branch, saving Elena’s life. “If you’re going to die, it might as well be epic,” Bekah told Elena. So was the heroic deed instinct or an act of kindness? Rebekah won’t say.. But there is one thing we do know: Actions speak louder than words.

2. Klaus saves Caroline, again
After Klaus (Joseph Morgan) bit Caroline (Candice Accola), Tyler (Michael Trevino) laid her weakened body within the OV’s reach so that he could either save her or watch her die. Klaus tried to choose the latter. “Don’t worry; it won’t be long now,” he told Caroline before turning his back on her pain. But apparently the Big Bad is not as cold-hearted and evil as he thinks. Seconds after Blondie uttered what were to be her last words, a tormented Klaus pulled her into his arms. He bit his wrist and pressed his arm to her lips. Then, on the verge of shedding a few thousand-year-old tears, Klaus caressed Caroline’s hair while she guzzled the cure — his blood.

1. Stefan admits he wants to be human
We all thought Stefan wanted the cure to vampirism for Elena. Clearly she did too because her face showed more than surprise when the Nice Guy Salvatore told Rebekah something to the contrary. “Every single moment of my last 146 years has been ruled by the pain of being a vampire,” Stefan said. “This cure ends that. It ends the guilt and it ends the suffering.” On the other hand, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) says nothing would make him more miserable than being human again. These brothers really don’t have a lot in common, do they?
