Diehard Vampire Diaries fans know that they have author LJ Smith to thank for bringing them the into the supernatural-infested town of Mystic Falls. (Thanks, LJ!)

The author originally penned the first two books in the series 20 years ago, then added another three to that list before the books were turned over to ghostwriters. Now, as we’re getting into the thick of Season 4 of the TV series, LJ sat down with Salt Lake magazine to discuss the importance of her audience.

"I really appreciate the support of the fans, because that's my goal, to get through to them and it seems that if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be writing and wouldn't have anyone to write for," she explained.

In fact, it’s thanks to those loyal fans that the issue of borrowing ideas has come into play. Many readers have suggested that Stephanie Meyer may have lifted some vampy ideas for her Twilight series from the author.

"There are a lot of parallels pointed out by fans between the Twilight books and The Vampire Diaries,” she says. “I haven't read those books, but I've been told the love triangle aspect is similar and the idea of what I call the soulmate principle. It's imprinting in those books."

Do you agree that there are a lot of similarities between the Twilight triangle and that of Elena (Nina Dobrev), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley)? Or is this totally off base?
