As the old saying goes, it takes two to tango. And in Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 14, “Dangerous Liaisons,” Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) did that — and more. But we noticed a lot of rumbling about who was to blame (or thank, depending on whether you like vamped-up hookups) for the tryst between the two.

“Poor Damon” was trending on Twitter the night the episode aired after Elena (Nina Dobrev) straight up told him that his love for her was his problem. In typical Damon fashion, the vampire went off the rails and temporarily killed Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic). Then he drowned his sorrows at the Mystic Grill, where he ran into Rebekah, who had been rejected by a broken-handed Matt (Zach Roerig). In a bit of a drunken haze, the two went to lick each other’s wounds in private.

If Elena had been a little kinder to Damon, he probably wouldn’t have gone off with Rebekah. On the other hand, Damon’s a consenting, ancient vampire capable of making his own choices — and Rebekah definitely found a way to get back at Elena for staking her.

Elena definitely won’t be happy when she learns what transpired between Rebekah and Damon, but was she the one who caused them to hook up?
