Sometimes the kids of Mystic Falls need to get out of town for a while. Maybe they need to retrieve a relative or hunt down an enemy, or maybe they just want to have a little fun, eat some Cheetos, and drink some gas station coffee. And you know what that means: road trip!

We’ve loved tagging along on all The Vampire Diaries road trips, but for such very, very different reasons that it’s hard to pick a favorite. Let’s look back and decide, shall we? Shotgun!

Destination: Damon’s Witchy Ex!

In Season 1, Episode 11, “Bloodlines,” Damon (Ian Somerhalder) took Elena (Nina Dobrev) on a whirlwind trip to Georgia to track down his bartender ex Bree. They got drunk and flirty for the first time, and then he killed the mood by ripping someone’s heart out. You can’t take that guy anywhere.

Destination: Duke University

In Season 2, Episode 3, “Bad Moon Rising,” Damon, Elena, and Alaric (Matt Davis) hit the road to Duke University, looking for Isobel. Damon and Alaric were BFFs-to-be, which could have been fun, but we’re guessing the fact that Damon had just murderedJeremy (Steven R. McQueen) made for some really uncomfortable silences.

Destination: Damsel in Distress

Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley) had to become car buddies in Season 2, Episode 8, “Rose,” when they went on one of their many Elena-rescue missions, this time to Reidsville, North Carolina. Stefan was grateful that Damon came to help retrieve his kidnapped girlfriend, but Damon wasn’t havin’ it: “Can we not do the whole road trip bonding thing? The cliché of it all makes me itch.” Yikes.

Destination: Romantic Getaway

Stefan and Elena try to have a romantic weekend at the Gilrbert cabin in Season 2, Episode 14, "Crying Wolf." Unfortunately for them, a lot of other supernaturals show up to crash the party.

In Season 3, Episode 3, “The End of the Affair,” Damon found out that Ripper Stefan and his buddy Klaus (Joseph Morgan) were reliving their Chicago glory days, so he and Elena headed out for a search-and-rescue road trip. It was not a fun mission, but at least they had juicy reading material, in the form of Ripper Stefan’s diary of dark secrets.

Destination: Vampire Hunter

Unlikely road trip pals Katherine (Nina Dobrev) and Damon had to buckle up to try and find Original vamp hunter Mikael in Season 3, Episode 5, “The Reckoning. In an effort to stop Klaus and his Ripper-pet Stefan, they drove to find the desiccated, entombed immortal. Katherine is an intentionally sucky navigator, which made things tough, and then she did her whole “I have unconscious Jeremy in the trunk” thing, which made things awkward.

Destination: Bonnie’s Missing Mom

The stakes were high as Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Elena headed to North Carolina to try and track down the witch’s mom in Season 3, Episode 12, “The Ties That Bind.” Luckily, they had that Damon/Elena kiss to talk about, which definitely helped pass the time, and then Bonnie met her future flirting partner, Jamie.

Destination: Motel Make Out!

Damon and Elena teamed up again in Season 3, Episode 19, “Heart of Darkness,” this time to go pick up Jeremy in Denver. They stay overnight at a motel, and thus was born soda machine make-out heard round the world!

Destination: Frat Party Fun

Halloween party! In Season 4, Episode 4, “The Five,” Damon and Elena joined Bonnie as she went to Whitmore College to meet future-creepster Professor Shane. Then Delena got sexy on the dance floor

Destination: Big Apple

In Season 4, Episode 17, "Because The Night,” Damon took Elena to that special place where all newbie vamps should go at least once: New York City! Underground punk scene? Yes please.

Destination: Cure or Bust

After trapping Damon on a roof and stealing his car, Elena and Rebekah (Claire Holt) hit the road from NYC to Willoughby, PA in Season 4, Episode 18, “American Gothic.” They were in pursuit of Katherine and, of course, the cure, and we’re guessing they’re the most exciting to ever happen to this little townToo bad no one there will remember it.
