The last time we saw Elijah (Daniel Gillies) on The Vampire Diaries, he was standing in Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) doorway looking dapper and trying to get possession of Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) desiccated body. And after Klaus was thought to be dead, a tearful Elijah embraced his little sister as the duo revealed that Klaus did in fact create Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley), and Caroline’s (Candice Accola) bloodline. After being the reasonable one (aka the only one who questioned if Klaus was actually dead), Elijah seemingly hit the road (and therefore, broke our hearts).

We don’t know why, and we don’t know where he went, but we really hope he was either discovering the cure for vampirism, the cure for a sire bond, or just getting his hair done.

But we still want to know why Elijah left so quickly. Did he really believe Klaus was dead? Was he purely running from Alaric (Matt Davis)? Or did he know about Rebekah’s (Claire Holt) plan to kill Elena? Surely, Elijah wouldn’t have been OK with that; you know, with his love of Elena and his amazing moral compass.

There’s a number of reasons why Elijah could’ve decided to leave, but as long as he returns (and tells us everything), we’ll let it go. We can’t be mad at a man that moral (and with those cheekbones) for very long.

What do you want to see happen with Elijah in Season 4?
