After a season of dealing with the Ripper and his issues, Elena (Nina Dobrev) chose Stefan (Paul Wesley) and was happy for roughly thirty seconds. Unfortunately, The Vampire Diaries doesn’t deal in shiny, happy couples. Just before a reconciliation could take place, Elena went over Wickery Bridge and everything changed.

Now the complications that Elena and Stefan have to deal with go far beyond “My brother is in love with you.” Of course, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and his sexy eyes are still a factor, but Stefan might be his own worst enemy now that his girlfriend is a vampire — especially since Elena prefers drinking from people. “This is a guy who can't really get too close to human blood for too long without losing his mind, so it's like he's a guy who just got sober, and his girlfriend just turned 21 and wants to party. There are going to be some complications in their relationship as far as that,” Julie Plec tells Zap2It.

Paul Wesley thinks the couples’ problems might run even deeper. As he told Zap2It at San Diego Comic-Con, “Maybe he won't be attracted to her as much, because it'll remind him of himself... He hates himself because he's a vampire, right?”

Clearly, his recent return to ripping has left a mark on him, and Plec says Stefan may never return to the sweet guy we say in Seasons 1 and 2. "I don't think 'good' Stefan is 'real' Stefan,” explains Julie. “I think until the end of the series, the darker Stefan will always be the truthful Stefan."

But just because Stefan and Elena are having issues, it doesn’t mean the younger Salvatore will abandon the new vamp for another woman — despite what Paul Wesley says. Plec tells Entertainment Weekly the new love interest rumors aren’t true, saying, “I actually don’t even know where that came from. I think Paul’s talking wish fulfillment.”
