We trust that witch Esther (Alice Evans) about as far as a pre-vamp Elena (Nina Dobrev) could throw her. The Original mama is long gone on The Vampire Diaries, but all this cure for vampirism business has made us think of her again.

See, Esther was the first one to talk of turning someone from a vampire back into a human. It wasn’t called a “cure” in Season 3, Episode 15, “All My Children,” however. The witch glossed over how she’d accomplish the feat, but she wanted to revert the Originals (aka, her offspring) back into mortals. “As the witch who cast the spell that turned them into vampires, I can also reverse it,” Esther explained to Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Abby.

Esther planned to use the Bennett witches’ power to complete the spell. Before the juju really started flowing, however, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) turned Abby into a vampire to save Elena (Nina Dobrev) from Rebekah (Claire Holt). The spell was over before it could transform any of the Originals.

Bonnie later started practicing Expression with Professor Shane (David Alpay). In Season 4, Episode 8, “We’ll Always Have Bourbon Street,” a witch named Nandi told Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley) about the practice, saying, “Channeling the power of human sacrifice calls on darkness that can’t exist on this plane without swallowing it whole.”

Esther was into some serious stuff, but she claimed to be trying to restore the balance of nature. That sounds like the opposite of Expression — Shane is clearly attempting to raise someone (or several someones) from the dead. There’s nothing natural about that!

Much like Esther’s plan for reversing vampirism, the details of the cure are fuzzy. An ancient witch named Silas created both the spell for immortality (fangs and blood drinking) and the cure. Though he was extremely powerful, Silas needed the help of another witch, Qetsiyah, to create the immortality spell. Was that Expression or just run-of-the-mill dark magic?

Regardless, it wouldn’t be too shocking to us if we saw Esther again in Season 4. Someone has to tell Bonnie to lay off the herbal tea!
