Not only is Elena (Nina Dobrev) in the middle of a love triangle between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), she also seems to at the center of the Vampire Diaries world.

For example, a cure for vampirism is introduced, but right now it’s only being explored as a solution to Elena’s problems. Damon has longed to be human, too, but we haven’t yet glimpsed what the cure means to him. And while Stefan (Paul Wesley) told Rebekah (Claire Holt) he would take turn human again, that action would be a direct result of his feelings for Elena.

Elena’s life is often viewed as more important than anyone else’s. Damon has said he’d happily kill Bonnie (Kat Graham) to save Elena, and Stefan told his brother he regretted pulling Matt (Zach Roerig) from the sinking car instead of her. This Elena-centric attitude is seen with the murder of Chris, Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) hybrid, too.

“Chris wasn’t on screen enough to register as a character, but as a representative of the gang’s messed-up vision of life and who is and isn’t expendable, he’s a perfect symbol,” the AV Club’s recap of Season 4, Episode 6, “We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes” points out.

It’s troubling that Stefan knew about Chris’s broken sire bond. This wasn’t just another one of Klaus’s mindless minions. But even more telling is how Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) was thrown into the fray with no regard for the consequences. At least this time the younger Gilbert was allowed to make a choice — it wasn’t like they compelled him to go to Denver all over again.

Elena’s life wasn’t really even in danger at this point. Damon could have texted Stefan that he had her, shoved her off the bridge, and taken her back to Klaus’s plushly padded cell. The Original vampire lasted through the torment for 52 years; Elena couldn’t make it through one day while they explored the possibility of finding another member of the Five to activate?

Connor (Todd Williams) told Jeremy that he’d killed his vampire friend without a second thought. Maybe the hunter always had a low opinion of bloodsuckers, or maybe something about being in the Five changed his perspective. Perhaps that tattoo gets under the skin in more ways than one. If that’s the case, will Jeremy start to view his sister as a monster?

If a Gilbert vs. Gilbert showdown is upon us, it’s not clear who will side with whom, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the new hunter lost.
