We’re not going to lie: Ever since The Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 15, “All My Children,” we’ve thought Esther (Alive Evans) was kind of a beotch. The witch had a spell to turn all her linked offspring into humans — so that they could be killed. Why couldn’t she just let them live out the rest of their natural lives once they were no longer “abominations”? What a mother.
Well, that whole “vampires can go back to becoming humans” thing was pretty well glossed over in that episode. The fact that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) — who has admitted he so longs to be human — didn’t ask Esther for her un-Original recipe strikes us as odd — and perhaps gives us a hint about the Season 3 finale.
The Originals are no longer linked, and Damon, Stefan (Paul Wesley), Caroline (Candice Accola), and Tyler (Michael Trevino) all have a vested interested in keeping at least one of them alive. For Tyler, it’s his sire, Klaus (Joseph Morgan). For the rest, their bloodline is still a question mark, but if Esther ever comes back from her magical mystery tour, she can probably find a way to work that spell again. If an Original dying causes their vampire offshoots to keel over, will their transformation back to human have the same effect?
We’ve heard the Season 3 finale described as game-changing, and Joseph Morgan says at the end of it, viewers will say, “‘Oh my God! But what happens next?!’”
We don’t know what Esther thinks of vampires in general. Does she view them all as her despicable creation, or does she think only her children deserve to die? Perhaps the reason she wanted them to become human before killing them is so the rest of the bloodlines would be unaffected by their deaths. If that’s the case, then will Damon, Stefan, or Caroline decide to abandon their bloodsucking ways and turn human again?
What’s a vampire show without vampires — but what’s The Vampire Diaries if one of the Salvatores is suddenly human (and can totally impregnate Elena)?
