Truth be told, all the rules of vampire sire bonds haven’t quite clicked into place for us, even after we got some new info in Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 8, “We’ll Always Have Bourbon Street.”

Is it exceptionally rare, a one-in-a-million occurrence, as Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) stated? Not to take that literally, but given those odds, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has sired a hell of a lot of vampires.

“A vampire only bonds to her sire when she has feelings for him before she turns,” the witch Nandi tells Damon and Stefan. Charlotte was already crazy about Damon (and maybe already a little crazy?) when he made her into a fanged fangirl. And Elena (Nina Dobrev) repeatedly told Damon she had feelings for him before that night on Wickery Bridge. After hearing Nandi’s rules of sire bonding, we started wondering what other vamps turned humans who cared about them.

Naturally, we landed on Damon, Stefan, and Katherine (Nina Dobrev). Both brothers had trysts with the 19th century beauty, but only one couldn’t get over her and waited for decades to see her again. Remember chaste, 1912 Damon? “I do not need a woman; I am spoken for,” he told Sage, referring to his beloved Katherine, whom he thought was locked in a tomb.

After Sage loosened him up, Damon had no trouble filling his time with women until the tomb opened. But then he did everything in his power to track Katharine down, even after he realized she had been free the whole time. Finally, Anna broke Damon’s heart by telling him that Katherine knew exactly where to find him but hadn’t wanted to.

The “cure” for the sire bond, Nandi explains, is this: “Tell her to live a life without you. To never think about you again. To stop caring about you. And then, leave her.” While Katherine never uses those exact words on Damon, between Anna’s message and the wicked doppelganger’s “I never loved you; it’s always been Stefan” revelation, Damon would’ve pretty well gotten the message.

Maybe Damon never did everything Katherine told him to, but neither has Elena followed the elder Salvatore’s every instruction. Perhaps there are different intensities with the sire bond. Elena doesn’t seem nearly as puppy doggish as Charlotte.

Perhaps this is all wrong. But we have to admit, Damon waiting for the tomb to open did remind us of Charlotte and her bricks.
