Everyone doing OK? There was a lot to take in after Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 7, “My Brother’s Keeper.” Whether you love Elena (Nina Dobrev) with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) or Stefan (Paul Wesley) — or just enjoy the triangle itself — there was a lot to ponder after it was revealed that the new vamp is sired to the elder Salvatore.

Luckily, Zap2It spoke to executive producer Julie Plec to get some insight. “Without taking sides one way or the other, just looking at it objectively from our point of view as storytellers, there is more hope than ever for them [Damon and Elena],” she says. At the same time, she admits, “there's that nagging doubt, as to how much of it is true love and how much is the effects of a sire bond. It's a question that's going to take these two people who do care about each other so deeply, and just put the tiniest bit of an obstacle in their path.”

OK, one teeny obstacle. Isn’t there something else, though? Oh, yeah. Stefan. He and Elena just broke up. “I do think that the punctuation on the breakup is her finally giving in to these feelings for Damon, and then to raise the question of, Oh, God. Is that what she really felt or is it all part of the supernatural link between them?" says Plec, who admits Elena raced into bed with Damon faster than she might’ve in the real world.

And while not everyone approved of Stefan’s attitude toward vampire Elena — that she needed to be cured — Plec points out, “To Stefan's credit, he might be right. He might actually be right, that this is not who she is and this is not who she's supposed to be, so his desire is to try to correct that at all costs. So the question which we'll be exploring is, 'Is this who she is?' We don't know.”

Hopefully this clears up some questions, but we’ll definitely get more answers about the sire bond next week when the Salvatores head to New Orleans.
