It’s the ball to end all balls in Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 14, “Dangerous Liaisons.” Perhaps there’s something in the punch, because by the end of the evening, strange pairings are coming together and lives are in danger. Well, that last part happens at every Mystic Falls party, but Entertainment Weekly spoke with executive producer Julie Plec, who says that some serious triangle trouble is going down in the episode.
First, though, is the good ship Foriginal. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is trying hard to win Caroline (Candice Accola), but Plec says Vampire Barbie, who was once desperate for a boy to look in her direction, isn’t falling for his charm. “Our girl, who has come so far, is sort of like, ‘Talk to the hand, buddy.’ To see her take that stance against him, and also in defense of Tyler, is a really big deal for her.” Something tells us this rejection could unleash angry Klaus, though the object of his wrath might end up being a sibling. Plec hints that one of the Originals might be in immortal danger tonight, but she points out the scrappy bunch usually manages to find their way out of trouble.
Another guy who acts inappropriately when he’s hurt? Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). The bad news for Delena fans is that the one who’s wounding his pride might very well be Elena (Nina Dobrev). “The thing with Damon is, when he’s hurt he lashes out. He’s striking where it hurts most, probably very specifically, at Elena,” says Plec. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that she’s dancing with Stefan (Paul Wesley)?
Whatever causes Damon to go off with another girl, it could make Elena rethink her relationships with both Salvatores. Plec says Elena starts to think, “In the middle of it all, I’m still that girl who is not entirely sure that [I'm] supposed to be in love with any vampire, much less two.” All of this is leading to the inevitable decision Elena has to make, which Plec says is coming sooner than we would’ve guessed. “You’re not going to get through the season without all three of them understanding that a choice needs to be made, some way or another.”
Plec offers one last spoiler about those feelings Daniel Gillies said Elijah has for Elena: “Next week definitely is very much rooted in the foundation of this compassion that Elena has for Elijah.” Ruh-roh. Is the love triangle about to become a square? Probably not, but it’s kind of fun to think about…
