Some characters on The Vampire Diaries bounce back from tragedy pretty quickly. We love Caroline (Candice Accola), but she seemed to recover from her father’s death with minimal strife. But Bonnie (Kat Graham) is a different story.

The poor witch had a double devastation to deal with in Season 4, Episode 1, “Growing Pains.” First, she killed herself trying to save Elena (Nina Dobrev), then her Grams (Jasmine Guy) died (again) as punishment for her dealings in dark magic. Executive producer Julie Plec tells TV Guide that viewers shouldn’t expect Bon-Bon to be up to her old tricks in Season 4, Episode 2, “Memorial.” Bonnie “can't do any magic,” says Plec. “So first she has to let herself grieve, which is what happens in the second episode. Then, when we return to her in the fourth episode, it's about whether it's possible to get her magic back in a healthy way.”

Once Bonnie is back on her feet, she meets a new ally: the professor who took over Grams’s classes at the university. Plec explains, “He's an expert in the occult and in witchcraft. He'll take on a very clear interest in her as a mentor and she'll finally find someone who understands her, who she could talk to and he's going to help her try to heal.”

Gasp! Has Bonnie found her Giles?
