It’s a little confusing, but here’s the deal with The Vampire Diaries Originals spin-off: It’s not a done deal yet. The pilot will air as a regular episode of TVD on April 25, and The CW will decide whether or not to make it a full-fledged show from there.

That said, executive producer Julie Plec spilled some secrets to Entertainment Weekly about what we can expect from the pilot, and Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) sinister pal Marcel.

“The idea is that a turn of events in Mystic Falls sends Klaus to New Orleans to solve a mystery,”  says Julie. “He gets word that some people are making a move against him that might concern him. So he heads to New Orleans to try to figure who’s plotting against him and what they’re up to.” We’re not sure who would be foolish enough to plot against the OV, but Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) somehow winds up involved.

It turns out Klaus was one of New Orleans’s original (no pun intended) inhabitants. According to Julie, “He reacquaints himself with a vampire that he actually turned back in the day, Marcel, who has created a whole set of rules and a whole society for the supernatural community that he’s in charge of — sort of tipping his hat to Klaus and saying, ‘You taught me everything I know.’ So Klaus’ protegé is now the big king of the supernatural community in New Orleans and Klaus is stepping back into that.’”

Sounds kind of Anne Rice-ian. We could totally see Klaus being the life of the party in New Orleans — where his murder and mayhem will definitely be less noticeable than in Mystic Falls.
