Time to dig up your old Vitamin C album, because it’s graduation time in Mystic Falls. According to what Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec tells TV Line, everyone’s ready to leave high school behind.

“Every character is growing up and graduating, so to speak,” says Julie, “and setting up the future of their grown-up worlds outside of Mystic Falls… Or maybe not.” Now that Elena (Nina Dobrev) has a new set of fangs, will she even be interested in earning her cap and gown? Becoming undead in the middle of senior year has got to give a girl at least a hint of an existential crisis. Regardless, it seems unlikely that she’ll leave Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) behind. (He really should’ve pulled a David Silver and graduated early with all his friends.) But Klaus (Joseph Morgan) has been trying to entice Caroline (Candice Accola) away from her hometown, and even if she isn’t keen on the OV, she did seem excited to see the world.

It will likely take most of the season to reach these milestones, so don’t worry about saying goodbye to anyone just yet. And in the words of Vitamin C, “As we go on, we remember, all times we had together. And as our lives change, come whatever, we will still be friends forever.” The poignancy of those lyrics will never fade.
